tezukaspanels:

Welcome to the first episode of non-Tezuka Saturday on Osamu Tezuka’s Panels (stay tuned)!

This week I give You Polish surrealist painter Zdzisław Beksiński. He’s famous for his disturbing, grim and nightmarish paintings filled with apocalyptic feeling.

Presented here are (all titles and interpretations by me):

  1. “Hermits” - an alegory of social desintegration and loneliness. And the fragmentation of the online community, as some sociologists would say.
  2. “Fear” - my personal favourite - the character which crawls among burning ruins of a city symbolises the condition of a human being in the world where all humanistic values were destroyed. Inevitable Armageddon doesn’t stop the miserable character whose identity was stolen (or sacrificed by himself) from pitiful struggle to survive. Driven by atavistic fear of death all he can do is crawling (metaphorically speaking), a mere shadow of once a prideful human. Kurtz probably had this picture in mind when he said “The horror, the horror” - and died right after saying these words in order to underline his statement.
  3. “Wanderer” - an alien walking on stilts. What else can I add?
  4. “Black widow” - an alegory of the sorrows of a teenage girl
  5. “The Sunman” - ???
  6. “In hoc signo vinces” - in this sign you will conquer; this painting is so immensly packed with christian symbolism that its interpretation(s) would require writing a whole book. I’m too lazy for that, think for yourselves.
  7. “Stroll” - the character from Munch’s “The Scream” with her mother are strolling through the forest using an early prototype of AT-ST.
